HOW TO: Be the Healthiest You can Be

Whatever Wednesday

It’s been a misconception for years now that a person is only healthy if they are thin, or they play sports, or they never eat junk food. Although those people can also be healthy, they are not necessarily more healthy than someone else. There is more to being healthy than the number on your scale or the amount of running you do (although, that is part of it). So I thought I would do something a little different today and give some simple tips on how to be as healthy as you can be, and feel as happy or great as possible. Now, I don’t have a magic spell and I’m not a nutritionist or a health specialist by any means, but over the years I have learned a few things that can make people healthier and happier on top of exercise and eating healthy!

Get Lots of Rest & Having a Sleeping Schedule
Getting a good nights sleep is so important, and having a consistent sleep schedule is even more important! Sleep will give you all the energy you need for the next day (more energy than coffee will give you after getting absolutely no sleep). On top of that, having a consistent sleep schedule will make having a good nights rest even easier because your body will be used to going to sleep at a certain time and waking up at a certain time. If you go to school or work everyday, a good nights sleep will also help with concentration in the class room or at the work place and you will find that focusing is much easier. Getting a good nights rest will make you so healthy and so happy and you will enjoy your days more than you would with less sleep.

Drinking Lots of Water
Of course, this is an obvious one. Drinking water is important for the obvious reason of keeping us alive, but it’s also important to drink lots of water to stay healthy. Drinking more water will do plenty of things for your body. It will make your skin look better, give you more energy, help clear your body of any toxins and overall just make you feel better. I personally like to have a glass with a straw sitting on my desk all day and I re-fill the cup every time it is empty and it helps me to drink more water.

Think Positively
Keeping your body healthy is only half the battle of health. Having a healthy mind if just as important. By thinking more positive thoughts and not focusing on negative thoughts, you will realize how healthy and happy you feel. This is definitely one thing I struggle with because I do tend to have a lot of negative thoughts, but it is something I’m really working on in order to feel healthier and happier! A great example of turning a negative into a positive is when you feel sick. Instead of staying in bed, get dressed and do your hair or makeup or whatever your routine is every single day and go do something outside. It’s all in your mind and if you act as if you’re not sick, you’re bound to feel less sick than you would if you were laying in bed complaining about how sick you are.

Do Something Each Day that makes You Happy (even something little)
Each day, even on what feels like a bad day, do something that makes you happy. Anything! Go outside, go for a hike, go for a run, listen to some music, write a blog post, talk to a family member or a friend…anything! Personally, I love listening to music. Most mornings I will put some happy and up beat music on to start my day and it already feels like my day may go well! Have you ever heard this song? It’s bound to make any time in your day awesome.

Eat Breakfast
I’m sure you’ve heard this a million times before, but breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You’ve been sleeping for hours and you haven’t ate. Breakfast, whether you like it or not, will give you the energy you need to go on with your day. I typically will have an egg and some fruit, yogurt and fruit or oatmeal and fruit for breakfast and those different breakfast choices give me enough energy until around lunch time, which is perfect! So don’t skip out on a good breakfast and deprive yourself of the energy you need to have an awesome day!

Exercise Your Own Way
Exercise is of course an extremely important part of being healthy, however, not everyone feels as great or as comfortable running for hours on the treadmill, lifting weights or even running for miles. So what I suggest is, do something you love to do that would help you get exercise. If you are doing something you love, you’ll hardly even notice you’re getting your exercise in and you’ll never end up “dreading your next workout”. Some people love to go for long walks, skateboard or longboard, ride their bike, hike, rock climb and much more! Exercise doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go on the treadmill for hours. If you are just wanting to get physical activity in every day of the week or some days of the week, choose to do something you love!

Healthy Eating and Eating within Moderation
Being healthy is about having a balanced diet and making sure you’re eating within moderation. If you can’t help but get that hot chocolate or that donut, try getting it once a week or every other week instead of everyday. It’s not all about dropping everything you enjoy and eating kale and celery. Some people love sticking to an extremely healthy lifestyle where junk food isn’t involved, which is awesome and if they enjoy that, that’s great too. But if you are not someone who can do that, don’t deprive yourself, just remember everything in moderation. Healthy eating is a lifestyle choice, it can’t just be a quick fix diet.

I understand that most of these tips were pretty obvious, but i just thought I’d share with you guys what personally makes me feel healthier and happier! Let me know in the comments below if you have any tips and tricks on being the healthiest you can be or if you agree with any of the tips I’ve given. What is one thing that makes you feel super healthy and happy? Have an amazing week!
